Tenderness of Heart

So check out this little bit of craziness. On the left here is my friend, writer Jonathan Evison, in one of his lovely author’s photos taken by photographer Keith Brofsky last year upon the release of Jonathan’s book West of Here. On the right is an image scanned from the latest issue of Mad Magazine of a parody piece on Ron Paul. Notice any similarities? Neither Jonathan nor Keith were contacted by Mad Magazine for permission to use the photo, nor where they even credited somewhere for it. WTF?

Nothing is sacred anymore…

Regarding my original post, the photographer Keith Brofsky gave us an update. Here it is in his own words:
“BREAKING: Mad Magazine’s art director just called! He saw my Tweet on the subject, (proof of the power of Twitter) and warmly and humbly set the record straight. They actually did buy the image off “Dreamstime” and he apologized for not providing a credit line. (That’s a stock photo agency.) We chatted for awhile - they still use the same assignment photographer from 1964 and the same illustrator who’s now 90 years old still does the back-page fold in. So all’s well that ends well. And kudos to Mad Magazine for continuing a great tradition.”
Oh and he also said he looked up the transaction and Mad paid $1.68 for the “stock” photo.
